Whistler, British Columbia — Snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis gets another shot at Olympic gold today.
Will she screw it up again?
Jacobellis famously flopped yards from the finish line in snowboardcross at the 2006 Games. She was on her way to gold when she tried to add a flourish by grabbing her board while going over the last jump. She caught an edge on the landing and crashed on her backside.
She is the favorite going into today’s snowboardcross and with a victory could remove the stigma that has been attached to her for four years. She has won three straight X Games titles, but she remains best known for her Turin tumble.
Asked last week if she would try a trick on the last jump again if she is all alone in front, Jacobellis smiled.
“I don’t know,” she said. “[It will be a] surprise. Let’s see how the jumps are.”
⇒ The men’s figure skating competition begins with tonight’s short program. The U.S. has Evan Lysacek, Johnny Weir and Jeremy Abbott competing.
Weir is thinking of adding a quadruple jump during Thursday’s free skate, a rarity for the flamboyant skater.
“What do I have to lose?” asked Weir, who finished fifth in Turin. “I’m not a favorite for a medal here. If I feel like doing it, I will do it.”
Weir is always an interesting quote. He has been staying with ice dancer Tanith Belbin in Vancouver and described how he filled the room with candles to make it smell nice.
You can count on something unique tonight when Weir skates.
“I want to win over people’s hearts and minds,” he said. “I want people to be transported away when I am skating.”
