JENNY GIVES FANS A SHOW
Jennifer Capriati filled the house at Ashe stadium yesterday and kept the fans in place from start to finish in her spellbinding 51-minute mastery of Evie Dominkovic 6-2, 6-0 in the second round.
Capriati, the No. 2 seed, received a standing ovation when she was finished after dropping just three points in the second set. “I think they just would love to see me [go to the Finals] and they’re behind me 100 percent,” she said. “Last year maybe I had most of the supporters out there but it’s not the same feeling. Like last year was kind of like they . . . didn’t know what was going on with me. This year it’s . . . full circle. It’s like 100 percent support.”
Capriati has lost in the Round of 16 two straight years here. In 1999, she held a tearful press conference after her ouster, reading a letter begging reporters not to ask questions about her nose-ringed, pot-smoking past.
