Less than a week before players must report to training camp in Albany, the Giants signed the first of their nine draft picks yesterday when fifth-round pick Mike Rosenthal agreed to terms.

Rosenthal, a 300-pound tackle from Notre Dame, agreed to a three-year deal for the NFL minimum salaries of $175,000, $250,000 and $325,000, plus a signing bonus of $95,500. He is expected to back up starting right tackle Scott Gragg.

The Giants were also close to signing cornerback Andre Weathers of Michigan, one of their two second-round picks. Weathers likely will agree to a three-year deal for the league minimums, plus a signing bonus of about $42,000.

It is quite possible that guard Luke Petigout of Notre Dame, the one rookie expected to start this season, will not be signed by Thursday, when players must report to camp, and that Petigout will miss a few days of practice.
