This was Lewis Ferguson’s first ride over the fences, and maybe it should be his last.

Ferguson, an amateur jockey, was competing at the Wincanton Racecourse in Somerset, England, when he fell out of horse Merrion Square’s saddle just as the horse was preparing to jump the fence. Some contend that Ferguson did not fall off, but instead was jumping off the horse — for an unknown reason — and picked an incredibly poor time to do so.

Either way, Ferguson slammed into the barricade and ricocheted into a sky-high somersault, landing flat on his back. Surprisingly, he walked away unharmed, and returned to the stables the following morning.

“He walked into the parade ring and was chatting away as if nothing had happened, calm as you like,” eight-time champion trainer Paul Nicholls told BBC Sport. “It was amazing, I’ve never seen anything like it.”
