BOSTON – Joe Torre and John Vander Wal took serious objection to umpire Larry Young’s strike zone for the final pitch of a 4-3 Yankee loss to the Red Sox.

Vander Wal, batting with a full count, runners on second and third and two out in the ninth against Ugueth Urbina, took a changeup he believed was outside and made a motion toward first.

But Young punched him out and the Red Sox had their third win in four games over the Yankees.

“Take a look at the replay, that’s all I can say,” Vander Wal said. “In my opinion it was a ball, no doubt in my mind.”

Torre didn’t hold anything back after his club lost for the fifth time in six games.

“It was a foot outside,” said Torre, who talked to Young in the fourth when Robin Ventura was called out on strikes. “I am not an umpire complainer . . . But that one was real bad.”
