JONES PLEADS GUILTY
Former LIU star guard Charles Jones pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct yesterday and was sentenced to a conditional discharge with the understanding that he will perform 30 days of community service, working with a youth foundation.
Jones, 23, made his guilty plea in Brooklyn’s Criminal Court.
“This defendant recklessly created a risk to public safety,” Kings County District Attorney Charles J. Hynes said in a statement yesterday. “This sentence of communtiy service will ensure that he gives back his time and talent to the community for his alarming behavior.”
Jones could not be reached yesterday at his Brooklyn home. His agent, Eric Fleisher, did not return a call from The Post.
As The Post reported on Jan. 12, Jones, along with two men, was arrested and charged with threatening an LIU security guard at a university dormitory at 3 a.m. on Jan. 10.
Earlier that day, Jones attended a party that turned rowdy and was ejected from the dormitory by the guard, Otho Babs. Jones returned later with Norman Epps, 38, and Gregory Cordew, 25, and a gun, police said.
After the police were called, the trio fled, but were picked up by police near the dorm at 190 Willoughby St. According to police, an unloaded .357 magnum was found in a nearby street flower pot.
A 6-foot-3 guard, Jones, who was not drafted by an NBA team, had a tryout with the Bulls last spring and is hoping to sign with the team this season.
