Alkmaar, Netherlands – U.S. forward Jozy Altidore is set to join Dutch side AZ Alkmaar after announcing Friday night on Twitter that he has “agreed to terms to join AZ.”

Altidore’s agent, Lyle Yorks, announced on Twitter “nothing has been signed yet,” but the moved is expected to be completed next week. If the switch is finalized, it would mark the end of a failed stint with Spain’s Villarreal.

The 21-year-old New Jerseyan left Major League Soccer in 2008 to join Villarreal, but failed to break into the lineup and spent time on loan at Spain’s Xerez, England’s Hull City and Turkey’s Bursaspor.

Altidore was born in Livingston, NJ and played parts of three seasons with the Red Bulls. He was the 17th overall draft pick in 2006 and was transferred in June of 2008 for a $10 million fee that is still the biggest ever for an American.
