The Breeders’ Cup World Championships, to be run this year at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4-5, has added a six-furlong sprint for 2-year-olds, open to colts, geldings and fillies, bringing the total number of Breeders’ Cup races to 15.
The new race, to be run Friday, has a purse of $500,000 and a maximum 14 starters.
“In discussions with horsemen on selecting a new race, an overwhelming majority requested that we add a Juvenile Sprint to the program,” said Clem Murphy, chairman of the BC racing and nominations committee. “There are a number of talented 2-year-old sprinters around the world who are not suited or may not be ready to run the two turns at 1 1/16 miles of the Juvenile or Juvenile Fillies in early November.”
