Next up, Kenyon Martin.
The Nets’ summer to-do list grows shorter by the day but there are several major items that still need to be addressed and the next is a possible contract extension for Kenyon Martin. Negotiations can start today.
“I don’t know what is going to happen. If I could do that and knew, I’d buy a lottery ticket,” said Martin’s Houston-based agent, Brian Dyke. “I expect Rod [team president Thorn] and I to talk sometime [today], but I’m not looking to do more than that today.”
The Nets already have re-signed Jason Kidd for $103 million over six years, given Alonzo Mourning a $22.6 million free-agent deal, provided Lucious Harris with a two-year (one totally guaranteed) deal for $5 million, signed first-round pick Zoran Planinic for a three-year deal in the $3 million range.
“I have no expectations [for what will happen],” Thorn said. “It really isn’t anything I want to comment on.”
Martin and his side will seek a six-year extension for $85-90 million.
“Nothing has changed,” said Dyke, who along with Martin two weeks ago expressed their desire for a maximum contract.
“We’ll talk and we’ll take it from there. We’ll speak on the phone, this isn’t something where we need to sit down and be face to face. We’ll see how it goes. It’s a process and the process has to be explored.”
Martin, the first overall pick in 2000, could become a restricted free agent after next season if he is not extended. As a restricted free agent, the Nets would have the chance to match any offer.
