PITTSBURGH — When you blow a cover in the final seconds because a 6-foot-9 player misses a dunk with his team leading by 20, you realize how stupid it is that we continue to do this.
Buffalo (+6) over Kentucky: While it’s inexcusable that Arizona refused to feed the ball to the best player in the country in the biggest game of the season, the Bulls’ 21-point margin of victory made it clear the biggest upset of the NCAA Tournament thus far wasn’t a fluke.
The Wildcats barely squeaked by Davidson after not hitting a 3-pointer — Kentucky’s first time without one since 1988 — and their lack of shooters will give Buffalo another upset opportunity. The Bulls made 15-of-30 3-pointers against Arizona.
Ohio State (+3½) over Gonzaga: I put the Zags in the championship game in my bracket, but the most lopsided action of the tournament — almost 90 percent of bettors have jumped into bed with Gonzaga! — has made it clear that they’ll need to win another one in the final minute to make it to the Sweet 16.
Michigan (-3) over Houston: Rob Gray won’t have another 39 points in him against one of the best defenses he has faced all season. Though the 6-foot-1 senior guard was superb in his first-ever NCAA Tournament game, the Wolverines’ defense continues to play an at exceptionally high level, ranking third in efficiency all season, and against the second-best defense (Cincinnati), Gray shot 9-of-35.
Michigan’s offense should also be back to normal after a shaky showing against Montana, having finally played after nearly two weeks off.
Tennessee (-5½) over Loyola: I hate to be a downer, but the Ramblers’ run ends here. Loyola hasn’t lost since Jan. 31, and provided the moment of the tournament so far, but the Volunteers present a slew of problems with their size, and defensive consistency.
This season: 20-18-1
2011-17 record: 199-155-8
