Derek Jeter is off to a horrendous start defensively with three errors in two games. Iâve been at both games and his range was limited as well as ground balls snuck past him, balls that should have been outs.
Everyone went crazy over the pop fly that Alex Rodriguez missed on Opening Day but the truth is Jeterâs defense has been terrible.
Yankee fans wonât want to admit this but right now young Jose Reyes is the best shortstop in New York. His defense, especially turning the double plays the first three games for the Mets has been outstanding.
Shortstop is the key to a teamâs defense and the Yankees defense is bad because Jeter is playing so poorly. He has to play better, starting tonight at the Stadium against the Orioles.
The Yankees are one sloppy team right now. It’s as if it’s the first few days of spring training and not the first few days of the season.
There also is a different vibe in the Yankee clubhouse right now. You don’t get the feeling that they have the feeling that they are invincible as in years past.
Maybe that is a good thing, that they know they have to work harder this year, but I also think it is a byproduct of knowing their starting pitching isn’t as dominant as it once was, and that takes a toll on the defense.
In addition to Jeter’s problems, Robinson Cano has a tendency to nonchalant balls and no one in the outfield has a good arm.
Itâs beyond me how outfield arms donât matter anymore to scouts and teams. If you can hit, they stick you in the outfield no matter how bad your arm is and that is taking itâs toll on pitchers.
They Yankees’ six errors in two games is the first time since 1926 that they have made that many errors in the first two games, according to Elias.
Jeter said after last nightâs game, âWe have to tighten up.ââ
Do they ever, if not, the changing of the guard has taken place and Jose Reyes is the new King of Shortstops in New York.
