If today really was Landon Donovan’s Everton finale, he went out in grand style.
The U.S. National Team star had just a 20 minute cameo off the bench, but made the most of his time with a goal and an assist. He helped lead the Toffees to a 5-1 rout of Hull City, tying a club record with a sixth straight Premiership home win.
Donovan has been a huge part of that success since arriving on loan from the L.A. Galaxy. Today he came off the bench with Everton already leading 3-1, and put the game out of reach.
He set up Ayegbeni Yakubu with a perfect goal-scoring chance, only to see it wasted with a high shot into the stands. Then Donovan showed how it’s done, one-timing a low cross back across the goalmouth and into the side netting for his second league goal. He helped cap the rout when he selflessly passed back and set up Jack Rodwell’s final tally. Check out the video beloew…
U.S. National Teammate Tim Howard had little to do, hardly tested by Jozy Altidore’s ragged Hull outfit. As for Donovan, one has to wonder will he return to the Galaxy as L.A. boss Bruce Arena has stated he would, or will he stay in England with Everton? Or could he even make a summer move to Chelsea?
Rumors are rampant that out-of-favor Joe Cole will bolt Chelsea for Manchester United this summer on a free _ akin to the Red Devils’ Michael Owen signing _ and according to the Daily Mail, Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti wants to bring Donovan in as Cole’s replacement.
What do you think of Donovan coming back to MLS? Figure he’ll extend his loan to Everton? Want to see him at Che$ki this summer replacing Cole? Holla at us….
