St. John’s coach Steve Lavin, who underwent successful cancer prostate surgery on Oct. 6, returned to practice yesterday. But his status for tonight’s game against Lehigh in Carnesecca Arena in the 2K Sports Classic remains uncertain.
When Lavin showed up for practice he was greeted with hugs, high fives, hooting and hollering. And that was just from the assistant coaches. The players also were delighted.
Lavin made it through a solid three-hour practice. Since it was the most strenuous excursion he has had since the surgery, Lavin is waiting to see how he feels today before making a decision on tonight’s game against Lehigh, which will make its season debut.
“I’m definitely feeling closer to full strength, and eager for a return to the sidelines,” Lavin said in a statement released by St. John’s. “I’ve been pleased with the progress made by our young team. During this period of recuperating, Coach [Mike] Dunlap and the staff have worked in an impressive, collaborative manner to prepare our team for the challenges ahead.”
The Johnnies (1-0) are coming off a 74-59 win over William & Mary Monday night. Lavin watched the game at home. Assistant coach Rico Hines was on crutches after having torn his Achilles tendon. The players have remained injury and surgery free.
“I’ve been monitoring the team’s progress by watching DVDs of practices and games,” Lavin said. “I’ve also been in contact via iPhone, text and e-mail with our coaches, student-athletes and recruits … the effort from this team has been outstanding.”
St. John’s also is expecting good news today, the start of the early signing period. Recruits Norvel Pelle and Amir Garrett, who did not meet freshman academic admission standards, will resign with the Red Storm.
Pelle, a 6-10 post player, is enrolled The Phelps School in Malvern, Pa. The 6-6 Garrett is at Bridgton Academy in Massachusetts. Both players could enroll at St. John’s in late December, giving the Red Storm a size boost it sorely needs.
