One player who’s play has been rising with the stakes for the Jets this season has been linebacker Mo Lewis, who was all over the field making big hits Sunday in Oakland.

“He’s played really well the last two games,” Herman Edwards said. “The thing about Mo is he understands what time it is. You don’t get these opportunities all the time and he understands that.

“He’s going to grasp the moment. He’s not going to let these opportunities to get into the playoffs keep slipping away.”

The Jets flew in the luxury of a Boeing 767 from San Francisco to New York Sunday night into yesterday morning, a rarity for the team, which usually takes the smaller jets in trips.

Edwards said he assigned the starting players to first class seats and he sat in the back with his wife, Lia.

“They were like happy little kids, playing cards like the boys club,” Edwards said. “They enjoyed it and went to sleep.”

Edwards again praised the job punter Tom Tupa did with the hold on John Hall’s game-winning FG. The James Dearth snap was very low and Tupa somehow got the ball upright without ruining Hall’s rhythm.

“Tupa did a nice job holding it, because [the snap] didn’t look good; it was about as flat as a pancake,” Edwards said.

Edwards praised special teams, particularly the blocked punt by Chris Hayes that was recovered by Jason Glenn, who returned it four yards for a TD.

“I’ve always told players if you block a punt and score, 97 percent of the time you win the game,” Edwards said.

The coach said the three plays that made the difference in the game for the Jets included the blocked punt, the 40-yard TD on a screen pass by WR Laveranues Coles and the 46-yard TD run by rookie RB LaMont Jordan.

“That blocked punt really brought us to life,” Edwards said.

Santana Moss is showing why he was a No. 1 pick the last two weeks, averaging more than 16 yards per return on punts. Moss returned three punts for 16.3 yards Sunday after returning two for a 16.5-yard average last week.
