LEFT BANK EARNS CIGAR
Trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez celebrated yesterday’s HolidayFest at Aqueduct yesterday in a big way, combining to win three races: an allowance with Kingsland, then the Demoiselle with Smoke’n Frolic, culminating with Left Bank’s authoritative victory in the $350,000 Cigar Mile, New York’s last Grade 1 race of the year.
The Cigar completed a stakes sweep for Velazquez, who also took the Remsen aboard Saarland for trainer Shug McGaughey.
“When you get to ride these kind of horses, you’re very confident,” said Johnny V, the runaway leading rider at this meet with 31 victories.
Left Bank, always a promising colt, has come into his own lately, finishing a rough-trip second in the Grade 1 Forego at Saratoga, winning the Grade 1 Vosburgh at Belmont, then coming home a close fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.
In the Cigar, the 4-year-old son of French Deputy pressured Affirmed Success for the early lead through quick splits of :23.2 for the first quarter-mile and :45.3 for the half, hit the front after six furlongs in 1:09.2, then drew off when asked to score by 31/4 lengths. His final time, 1:33.1, was third fastest in the stakes’ 14-year history.
“I thought Left Bank would be close to or on the lead,” Pletcher said. “He’s a fast horse. He’s been on the lead in :43 and change. The main thing is to let him get his confidence the first part of the race. It looked like he was always going well.
“The mile was perfect for him, but sometimes horses coming out of the Breeders’ Cup regress. He showed us no indication he would do that.”
Pletcher got an added bonus when his colt Graeme Hall ran second in the Cigar, a head in front of last year’s Preakness winner, Red Bullet.
“It’s a shame for Graeme Hall that Left Bank was in the race,” said Pletcher. “He ran fast enough to win a lot of Cigar Miles. This was that elusive Grade 1 we’ve been looking for.”
Left Bank paid $6.90 as the favorite, topping a $33 exacta and $156.50 trifecta. The race was marred when Illusioned, trained by Bill Mott, broke down in midstretch and was pulled up by jockey Pat Day. He apparently fractured both sesamoids in his right front leg and was in the care of veterinary surgeon Dr. Stephen Selway.
