After the Liberty let a golden opportunity to close out their best-of-three first-round playoff series with the Detroit Shock slip away Sunday, they will take another crack at dethroning the defending WNBA champions in tonight’s decisive Game 3 at 7 p.m. in Detroit.
Despite being outscored by 34 points in paint (44-10), the Liberty managed to keep Game 2 close, tying the game at 71 with a jumper by forward Shameka Christon with 2:54 remaining. Christon and Janel McCarville each scored 19 points to lead the Liberty, and Deanna Nolan paced the Shock with 16.
Though the Shock were the conference regular-season champions and the Liberty failed to finish above .500, the teams have split six games played between them this season, including the playoffs. Both regular-season games in Detroit went to overtime, with the Liberty winning, 82-81, on July 6 and losing, 87-82, on July 13.
The winner will advance into the Eastern Conference finals against the Indiana Fever, who ousted the Connecticut Sun, 93-88 in overtime last night in their decisive third game.
