Don’t expect Charles Jones to lead the country in scoring this year.

Jones, the former Long Island University star, made his NBA debut last night for the Bulls. The 6-foot-3 guard played five minutes and failed to score after coming off the bench in the second quarter during the Bulls’ 83-67 loss to the Hawks. Jones missed all four of his shots.

The 23-year-old who led the NCAA in scoring in both his junior and senior years at the Brooklyn school, was signed by the defending NBA champions as a free agent and began the 1999 season on the injured list with plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

This is a piece of good news for Jones, who pleaded guilty to a disorderly conduct charge Jan. 21 after he was arrested with two other men for threatening an LIU security guard on Jan. 10. The police said they found a .357 magnum in a nearby street flower pot. Jones was sentenced to 30 days of community service.

Jones, a Bishop Ford High graduate, averaged 29 points, 5.2 rebounds and 7.3 assists as a senior last season. In 1996-97, Jones netted 30.1 points per game, while leading the Blackbirds to the NCAA Tournament. He is one of only seven players to lead NCAA Division I in scoring in back-to-back seasons.

The Bulls waived forward Mario Bennett to make room for Jones.
