Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson wants to invest in players during the January transfer window if a proposed deal to buy the club is successful, Sky Sports reported Friday.
The Premier League club is confident that New England Sports Ventures — fronted by Boston Red Sox owner John W Henry — will soon be at the helm after having their $476 million (£300 million) bid to buy the club accepted by the board.
The sale of the debt-ridden soccer club is conditional on the deal obtaining the league’s approval, and the resolution of a dispute involving board membership and any legal challenges.
Current owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett are also determined to battle to maintain control of the club. A final decision on the sale is set to be made by the courts.
However, the club is confident that if the deal is approved, Hodgson will have money to spend.
Hodgson said: “We know what we must do. We need new players and investment and know we’re weak in certain areas. These things have been the case since I arrived here and we have not had a chance to put it right. I ask for the fans’ patience, trust and belief as we will get it right.”
Liverpool has made its worst start to a season for 57 years with only a single EPL match victory to date.
The team has taken just six points from the opening seven matches and has sunk into the bottom three on the ladder.
Hodgson is ready to make moves in the transfer market and is keen to bring in new faces, after admitting his squad is not strong enough.
He added: “It is clear we need to strengthen in certain areas of the team and bring in more quality. I can guarantee that at the end of the season we won’t be sitting there at the bottom. Sometimes, even after a few games, people see you down there and are ready to pass out, but we’re not panicking. There is a lot more to come.”
