It was a banner day for female trainers and longshot players yesterday at Belmont Park as City Zip, from the Linda Rice barn, won the Grade 3, $100,000 Tremont Stakes for 2-year-olds at nearly 7-1 and I’m Brassy, an 11-1 shot trained by Kristina Dupps, took the Grade 2, $150,000 Prioress for 3-year-old fillies.

City Zip, a son of Carson City ridden by Jose Santos, had shown good form in two starts since breaking his maiden by 63/4 lengths in May, finishing a close second in the Kentucky Breeders’ Cup and third in the Flash. In the Tremont, he chased the rapid early pace (:21.4, :45.2) set by The Goo and ran him down in the stretch to score by 23/4 lengths, paying $15.80 after 5½ furlongs in a sharp 1:03.4.

“The last time he ran, he shipped in from Kentucky and only had 11 days between starts,” Rice said. “Time between races and getting familiar with his new surroundings was the key.”

I’m Brassy was making her first stakes appearance after winning both starts this year, a maiden race and an allowance dash, by more than two lengths.

Breaking from the rail under Mike Luzzi, the daughter of Dixie Brass cruised right to the front, setting quick splits of :22 and :45. Dat You Miz Blue, the talented New York-bred, hooked her down the stretch and they raced as a team to the wire, with I’m Brassy refusing to yield, digging in to win by a neck in 1:09.2 for six furlongs. She paid a whopping $25.40.

“It all came to plan,” Luzzi said. “We didn’t mind having the one hole because she’s so fast. Even though her fractions were fast, she relaxed perfectly and was waiting on horses. She just wouldn’t let that other horse get by her.”
