Shopping for Love and Winter Dreams came off the pace to win the split divisions of the Bouwerie Stakes for 3-year-old New York-bred fillies. Each race was run on a sloppy track at seven furlongs.

Shopping for Love, sent off the favorite, defeated Cedar Knolls by 6½ lengths in a time of 1:25. Ridden by Norberto Arroyo Jr., it was the second career stakes victory for the Ken Nesky trainee. She prevously won the Busher Stakes against open-company fillies on a sloppy track.

In the other division, Winter Dreams was last early but put in a powerful run in the middle of the stretch to overtake The Great Flora and draw off to a four-length victory for her first career stakes. Ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, the Jimmy Jerkens trainee ran the seven furlongs in 1:24.

Trainer Ken Streicher was fined $1,000 and suspended 15 days for the presence of Pentoxifyline in the post-race urine of Brass Bo, who finished third in the fourth race on February 9. Having waived his right to appeal, the suspension was reduced to seven days and will be served from May 22 to May 28.

2nd RACE – The race was marred by the breakdown of Comin To The Party in the stretch drive. She stalked the pace and was third in the stretch drive before breaking down and pulling up out of the race. She was vanned off, was examined to have broken both front sesamoids, and was humanely put down. Poivre withstood early pressure from favored Striking Move and drew off to a lengthy score in the slop.

3rd RACE – Jena Jena, a speedball that loves Belmont Park, broke well and effortlessly went to the front. But she was so full of herself that she ran the first quarter in :21 1/5, a suicidal quarter to run in a 61/2-furlong event. She ran the half in :44 3/5, with La Galerie chasing in second. At the top of the stretch, La Galerie was moving well and overtook Jena Jena with ease and drew away for the victory. Dixie Loe was last early but then put in a good run on the outside to overtake Jena Jena for the place spot.

4th RACE – Thunder Rider hit the gate at the start and then stumbled. He trailed the field early but then started to make his run on the far turn. He was in full speed turning for home and despite racing greenly through the stretch drive, made up plenty of ground on Rum Tum Tiger while finishing second. Favored Hondle was hustled out quickly by Robbie Davis to chase the pace but couldn’t get to the front and then hold off Rum Tum Tiger and Thunder Rider.

7th RACE – Jorge Chavez on Secret Friend rated off the early pace but then midway down the backstretch tried to shoot through an opening on the rail to gain the lead. Showmewhatsdue went with him on the outside when he made his move and the two battled for the lead on the far turn. Peeping Tom made a wide move on the turn to reach contention and then drew away in the stretch to gain the victory. Secret Friend held on well on the inside to finish second in his U.S. debut.
