NFL Hall of Famer Lynn Swann is betting he can burnish his alma mater’s battered athletic program — despite having taken some hits to his own reputation as a director at Caesars Entertainment.

University of Southern California named Swann its new athletic director on Wednesday with the goal of restoring its football program to its former glory. The program has been hammered by the NCAA for rules violations.

Swann, 64, still sits on the board of Caesars, the casino giant mired in a contentious bankruptcy. The company is locked in a battle with creditors who claim it transferred assets beyond their reach before putting its biggest operating unit into bankruptcy.

Last month, a court-appointed examiner found that Caesars and its private-equity owners shortchanged creditors by between $3.6 billion and $5.1 billion with the asset shuffling. The football great was cited by name in one of the examples of improper behavior.

Swann and other Caesars directors could face lawsuits accusing them of breaching their fiduciary duty as a result, sources said.

A spokesman for USC declined comment, while Swann did not return calls.
