If he hasn’t made a name for himself with his scores, John Maginnes made a spectacle of himself yesterday with his wardrobe.

The dramatic fashion statement didn’t elicit the gasps of horror he expected from clothes-conscious Long Island. Instead, the North Carolinian liked what he heard about his signal of support for New York.

His apparel choice for yesterday’s round of the U.S. Open was a golf top bearing a large, waving American flag as the background for the NYC skyline, busy as a bus stop, shirt of the brave.

“I got thanked. I didn’t expect that. I expected comments,” Maginnes said, smiling despite finishing 19-over for the tourney.

“I played so bad Thursday. I was going to wear it Friday, but I said, heck with it, I’ll wear it Sunday.”

Maginnes was having a ball after enduring Bethpage Black for four days, a 33-year-old still looking for his first PGA tour victory. He was asked to compare finishing at the U.S. Open to the tournament in Hartford.

He agreed that the final four holes had comparable ambiance.

“Yeah, Hartford on steroids,” Maginnes said.
