Manchester United has been linked with a litany of world class central midfielders, from Luka Modric to Samir Nasri to Wesley Sneijder. But when the Post asked Sir Alex Ferguson if he expected any more summer additions at Old Trafford, he insisted his shopping is done because he didn’t get the man he wanted.

“At this moment, I can’t see another addition,’’ Ferguson claimed. “The type of player we might have been looking for is not available to us, so I have to be happy with the players I have got at this moment in time.’’

For the past few years, Ferguson has decried a lack of value in the transfer market. But needing to replace five veteran players that either retired or were moved off to other clubs, Ferguson has spent money to inject his club with youth. The question remains will he have one more purchase in him this summer window?

The one thing that his club appears to be missing _ and something that was sorely needed in the Champions League final loss to Barcelona _ was creativity and control in central midfield, in essence a replacement for the retired Paul Scholes.

They’ve pursued Tottenham’s Modric and Arsenal’s Nasri, and reports persist that they’re still in the hint for Sneijder, who helped lead Inter Milan to Champions League glory last season and then the Netherlands to the World Cup final last summer.

“We lost five players in their 30s this summer. That helped finance the three younger players – Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David de Gea – I have brought to the club,’’ Ferguson said. “The ballpark changed to how I thought (about spending).’’

Manchester United opens play with the Aug. 7 Community Shield against rival Manchester City _ “our noisy neighbor,’’ Ferguson calls them _ and the transfer window doesn’t close until Aug. 31. That means, despite all his public denials and posturing, speculation will run rampant until it closes.
