Manchester United defeated Liverpool 3-2 Sunday with Hungarian striker Dimitar Berbatov scoring a hat-trick to secure the win at Old Trafford.

Manchester United looked to be coasting to victory after Berbatov scored with a sublime overhead kick in the 59th minute to put the home side up 2-0.

Liverpool pulled a goal back in the 64th minute after Steven Gerrard converted a penalty kick following a Jonny Evans foul on Liverpool’s star striker Fernando Torres.

Torres was again involved in the build-up to the second Liverpool goal, winning a free kick just outside the box after he was fouled by John O’Shea. Gerrard then wrong-footed United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar from the subsequent 20 yard free kick to level the score.

Manchester United already let a two goal lead slip late in their 3-3 draw at Everton the week before and this match appeared to be heading to a similar result before Berbatov’s 84th minute headed goal completed his hat-trick and secured all three points for the hosts.

Berbatov’s hat-trick was the first scored by a Manchester United player against Liverpool in 64 years.

Manchester United are currently one point behind league leaders Chelsea who play Blackpool later on Sunday.

Liverpool are currently 16th in the Premier League with only one win from their first 5 games.
