MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United fans chastened by Sunday’s disastrous 6-1 defeat to Manchester City were dealt some positive news Monday, with Javier Hernandez penning a new five-year deal.

The prolific Mexican striker, known as “Chicharito,” proved an instant hit with the United supporters after a series of game-winning performances in his debut season during the run to the 2010-11 English Premier League (EPL) title.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said he was delighted to reward the 23 year old with a new deal in only his second season at the English giant.

“The last player I remember making an impact as big and as quickly as Javier is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and he reminds me of Ole a lot,” Ferguson told the club’s official website. “His talent for creating space in the box and his finishing ability mark him out as a natural goalscorer.”

Chicharito was a second-half substitute during Sunday’s mauling at Old Trafford, but, while he teed up Darren Fletcher for United’s consolation, he was powerless as City dismantled the reigning EPL champion.
