Dick Stockton vs. Dick Enberg
(NFL play-by-play)
In the 1980s, when first-team NFL-casters Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen (then wearing NBC blazers) showed up on your screen – “Oh, my!” you knew it was a big AFC matchup.
Enberg now has taken his signature “Oh, my!” call to CBS, where he’s a second-teamer – a demotion more of circumstance than of ability. When NBC lost football, Enberg switched networks. But he remained a top play-by-player, largely because of his story-telling.
At Fox, Dick Stockton is the second-team play-by-player, too. Stockton is solid, but not spectacular.
Stockton effectively gets out of the way, which allows a good analyst to thrive. Stockton, though, doesn’t leave his own imprint on a football broadcast the way Enberg does. That’s not a liability, unless it’s being compared with Enberg’s presence.
Ultimately, Enberg, wins this Matchup.
