Steve Young vs. Dan Marino (As studio analysts)

There’s something just too perfect about ESPN’s Steve Young. It sometimes seems as if he were made in a factory. He’s the well-educated, glamour quarterback turned analyst. Though he makes some good points, it’s hard to relate to him.

Now, granted, Dan Marino of CBS and HBO is another glamour quarterback turned analyst. But he seems more like the type of guy you could have a beer with and watch a game.

On CBS’ pregame show, Marino’s style does especially well because he doesn’t enjoy hearing himself speak, the way Deion Sanders and Boomer Esiason do. This reflects well on Marino because he isn’t trying to out-slick anyone. Marino, with his Pittsburgh roots, is a lunchpail analyst.

Young makes sound points, but his whole act comes across as too contrived. Marino’s doesn’t.

Marino may not have a Super Bowl ring, but he does have a Matchup victory.
