Middays vs. overnights

(Where is Joe Benigno better?)

When WFAN’s Joe Benigno did overnights, his opening monologues were must-listens, because you felt his pain and his joy (well, every once in a while).

It made for entertaining radio. Then, at about 1:20 a.m., you usually went to bed.

Now, Benigno is solo on middays, and his demeanor doesn’t fit. While his recaps of games worked on overnights, his regurgitation of events is repetitive by 10 a.m. He still owns passionate opinions, but he often comes across as an irrational fan.

He desperately needs a partner. While Sid Rosenberg was never the right choice, a knowledgeable, even-handed cohort could counter-balance Benigno’s fan-hood.

The Matchup still likes Benigno, but mid-mornings are not his best spot. While he is better on overnights, he probably is ideally suited to follow the Mets’ postgame show in the summer and on Sunday afternoon/nights during football season. In these spots, his passionate rants would be resuscitated.
