Three’s Company!

Keep Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling together. The three-man booth works.

Cohen has made the transition from radio to TV smoothly. While he still looks a little uncomfortable on screen, he has picked up the nuances of TV very quickly and upgraded Met telecasts.

Cohen’s skills were best illuminated in the three-man booth during the Mets-Braves series. While Cohen subtly slipped in his opinion, he asked provocative questions that ignited debate between Hernandez and Darling.

What Cohen also did that too few play-by-players do is keep digging. He followed his questions with more questions. This forced Hernandez and Darling to give more.

When Victor Zambrano served up an Andruw Jones homer on a fastball, a seemingly exasperated Cohen wondered why Zambrano offered fastball-loving Jones a heater, which led to a heated heater debate.

So The Memo recommends scrapping your original plan of only using the three-man booth sparingly. You should use it regularly.
