Jan. 24 proved to be a very costly night for Antonio Margarito. Not only did he lose his WBA welterweight title to Shane Mosley, but his boxing license has been revoked for at least one year after a plaster-like substance was discovered inside his wraps just before their fight in Los Angeles.

The California State Athletic Commission announced the punishment yesterday after a hearing in Van Nuys in which Margarito pleaded ignorance and his trainer Javier Capetillo insisted he simply made a mistake. Capetillo also was suspended for one year.

California’s decision will be honored throughout the U.S., meaning Margarito and Capetillo can’t participate in a boxing event in America for at least one year.
