BALTIMORE – The Marlins were one of several teams with a scout here for last night’s Mets-Orioles game because the Amazin’s are considering trading for Livan Hernandez. The Mets also had a scout in Toronto to watch Livan’s last start there.

Before the Mets’ 4-1 win over the Orioles, GM Steve Phillips said a trade was still not imminent and that there were only two guys on the periphery of the market who would be either a No. 1 or No. 2 on the Mets. He said they would only be available if he were to knock the “socks off” the team with a proposal. At the same time, there are no clear-cut aces available.

“There are no Randy Johnsons out there,” he said.

Philips made a surprise visit here last night to “see the major league team,” as he put it, but insiders say he was here to take a close look at Octavio Dotel to determine if he wants to trade him or not. After Dotel’s command performance, he probably would be more likely to trade Jason Isringhausen. *Phillips said he would probably make a decision by the end of the week about whether to keep Vincente Rosario, the minor leaguer who was found not guilty of a sexual assault on a woman in Port. St. Lucie last year, in his employ.

“Now that all the facts are out and the judicial system has ruled, we are considering all the facts and we’ll make a decision how to handle that,” Phillips said. “We have an idea what we’re going to do.” *The Mets went 0-for-3 with the bases loaded last night. Even Robin Ventura, who came into the game with a .345 average with the bases full (41-for-119, 12 homers, 135 RBIs) struck out … Benny Agbayani had an RBI single. He had only two RBIs in his previous 40 at-bats over 15 games.
