Jose Reyes could be taking his talents to South Beach next season.

A source confirmed to The Post on Monday that the Marlins have spoken to the free-agent shortstop with the idea of making him the centerpiece of the team’s upgrades before opening a new ballpark in downtown Miami in 2012.

According to the Miami Herald, a Marlins representative called Reyes’ agent, Peter Greenberg, at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, the first possible moment teams were allowed to negotiate with free agents other than their own, to express interest.

The Mets’ exclusive window to negotiate with Reyes closed without general manager Sandy Alderson extending him an offer.

All indications are members of the Marlins’ hierarchy met with Reyes and Greenberg in New York last Thursday. Greenberg on Monday had no comment on the matter.

A source told The Post last week that Reyes is unlikely to take a hometown discount to remain with the Mets. Reyes also could want assurances the Mets are committed to winning in the next few years and not just rebuilding.

“It is true that Jose wants to win,” Greenberg said in an email to The Post last week.

Like the Nationals and Brewers, the Marlins are expected to wait and see what happens with Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder before deciding what direction to go with Reyes.

The Tigers, Giants, Phillies and Braves figure to be among the other serious suitors for Reyes.

At first glance, Reyes doesn’t seem like a natural fit for a Marlins team that still has Hanley Ramirez under contract. But Ramirez has indicated a willingness to play third base should the Marlins sign Reyes. The Marlins could also look to trade Ramirez for rotation help.

The Mets don’t figure to go beyond five years in any offer to Reyes.
