Christian Martinez is now the answer to a trivia question. Who was the first boxer to win a fight at the new Yankee Stadium?

The New York-based boxer kicked off last night’s card at Yankee Stadium by scoring a fourth-round TKO over Jonathan Cuba, another New Yorker. It was Martinez’s fourth win as a professional, all by knockout.

“I couldn’t wait for tonight,” Martinez, 22, said. “It was a tremendous feeling walking through the Stadium into the ring. It’s great being the first man to ever win a fight at Yankee Stadium. It feels historic.”

It was hot and humid for the opening fights with the threat of rain seeming to hover like an unwelcome visitor. But a slight breeze made things more bearable as the sun went down and the early arrivers seemed focused more on the boxing than the building.

The ring, erected in right-center field, was bathed in bright lights offering a natural complement to the sparkling new Stadium, hosting its first boxing event and the first at anything called Yankee Stadium since Muhammad Ali defeated Ken Norton in 1976.

There was no seating down the left-field line and only half of the Stadium was in use. But fans, more than 20,000 in all, were seated as high as the top deck in right field, where chants of “Cotto . . . Cotto” rang out long before the main event.

For now there are no immediate plans for another fight at Yankee Stadium any time soon.

Jets owner Woody Johnson confirmed he has talked to Top Rank boss Bob Arum about staging a boxing event at the new Meadowlands stadium next spring, and Arum is already plotting a card that might feature as many as three championships fights instead of one blockbuster.
