Curtis Martin and Wayne Chrebet got theirs last week. Last night, Kevin Mawae got his from the Jets.

The Pro Bowl center, who was scheduled to be a free agent after this season, agreed to a six-year contract extension believed to be worth more than $25 million, including a $9.5 million signing bonus, according to an NFL source familiar with the negotiations.

Both Herman Edwards and Mawae’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, confirmed that had a deal not been struck by this weekend the two sides would have tabled talks until after the season, because Mawae didn’t want the issue to distract his play once the season began, tomorrow in Buffalo.

Bartelstein would not release the terms of the deal, but he did say that it’s heavily front-loaded, making him “the highest-paid interior offensive lineman in the league for the next three or four years.”

The contract numbers drop off later in the deal, allowing Mawae to remain a Jet past his prime, though there are escalator clauses in the contract that would pay him more money if he retains his Pro Bowl form.
