MONACO — After going six years without a trophy at Arsenal, Cesc Fabregas collected his second medal in less than two weeks as he sealed Barcelona’s 2-0 victory over nine-man Porto to lift the European Super Cup.

Fabregas controlled a looped pass behind the defense from Lionel Messi before smashing a volley into the roof of the net Friday night to settle the evenly-fought game between last season’s UEFA Champions League champion and Portugal’s Europa League winner.

Messi earlier took advantage of a poor backpass from Fredy Guarin to round Porto keeper Helton and put Barca in front six minutes before halftime.

Guarin’s miserable evening was compounded in the dying minutes of the game with a red card, four minutes after teammate Rolando was dismissed for a second bookable offense on Messi.

Victory in the European Super Cup came 12 days after Barca defeated rival Real Madrid in Spain’s domestic Super Cup, with Messi scoring late in the second leg to secure a 5-4 aggregate win.
