Barcelona stars Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Lionel Messi were shortlisted Monday for FIFA’s soccer player of the year award, the Ballon d’Or.

The trio was announced at the headquarters of the French sports daily L’Equipe in Paris, along with the three contenders for the World Coach of the Year award, FIFA’s website reported.

Iniesta and Xavi starred in Spain’s victorious World Cup team — Iniesta scoring in extra time in the final to win the trophy — while Messi played for Argentina in South Africa.

The Argentine — chasing his third consecutive Ballon d’Or — was below his best in the summer, failing even to score during the tournament, but remained favorite for the award after another peerless season in club soccer.

Spain versus Barcelona was a feature of the World Coach of the Year nominations, too, with Spanish national team boss Vicente del Bosque favorite to top Barca manager Pep Guardiola.

Jose Mourinho also earned a nomination after guiding Inter Milan to a remarkable treble, the centerpiece of which was the UEFA Champions League.

The winners were set to be announced on Jan. 10.

L’Equipe’s award historically rewarded the European Footballer of the Year only, but merged earlier this year with FIFA’s World Player of the Year as the global game’s definitive playing accolade.
