METROS, AMADO NEAR SPLIT
It appears the MetroStars and former league MVP Amado Guevara – their disgruntled and deposed team captain – are likely to part ways. His war of words with the team’s GM has reached interminable levels, with one local Spanish-language newspaper running the headline, “Amado Guevara declares war on Alexi Lalas.”
“It’s just a matter of time,” Guevara’s agent, Pat McCabe, said of a trade. “It could be in two days, or it could be in two weeks. They don’t want him.”
Lalas criticized Guevara for playing a friendly match with his old Honduran team without permission this offseason. Guevara responded that he no longer wanted to play for Lalas and would give a halfhearted effort, if forced to.
Lalas acknowledged that he’d had cursory talks with almost every team in the league. The most logical would be Dallas.
