With the loss of their three National Team stars, the MetroStars have gone from streaking to struggling, falling from atop the MLS standings. What had been the league-leading defense has sprung a leak, and coach Bob Bradley is scrambling to patch it.

While the losses of forward Clint Mathis and goalie Tim Howard have been crucial, the injury to defender Eddie Pope has been devastating.

The Metros (5-3-2) were riding a seven-game unbeaten streak and had allowed an MLS-low five goals in eight games when Pope fractured his kneecap. They’ve coughed up five goals in their two losses since, and host defending champ L.A. at 4 p.m. on ESPN2 today.

Rookie Kenny Arena struggled subbing for Pope, and 22-year-old Argentine Juan Forchetti will likely get his first start.
