If you are one of the nearly three million viewers who have Cablevision in the Tri-State area, it looks as if you will be able to see the Mets play this season.

Cablevision and SportsNet NY, the Mets’ new network, have the framework for a deal to air the sports network, sources said yesterday. While people close to the negotiations emphasized that no papers are signed yet, a contract could be finalized as early as this week or it could take as long as two more weeks.

Either way, it looks as if SportsNet NY will be on Cablevision by the time it goes on the air, which is March 16. That day, the network will televise the Met-Braves’ exhibition game.

While no financial details are yet known, the fact that these two sides are this close at this point means that it is extremely unlikely that Met fans will be shut out in the same fashion that Yankee fans were four years ago. In 2002, Cablevision and YES could not come to an agreement for a full year.

Cablevision and YES were never this close to an agreement during that entire year.

Neither Cablevision nor SNY spokesmen would confirm the deal, but both have remained confident that Mets’ games would be on Cablevision this season.

It looks at this point that their confidence was well-founded, which is good news for Cablevision Met fans. Now, Mets fans with DirecTV hope to hear the same news soon.
