Enough talk about which guy is going in which round. Let’s take a practical look at a draft.

I labeled this item a mock, but it is actually the real draft of one my teams. Here’s the first half recap: My team is the Kill Barney Campaign, we mean this Barney. We have landed the second pick in the draft. Throughout, I’ll explain my reasoning for each pick I make, and any insight provided to me by other owners as to why they made their pick.

50/50 league starts 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 flex, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 PK, 1 DEF. Four points per passing TD, 10- (rush/receive) and 20-yard (pass) bonus points. No points per recep.

ROUND 1

1.1. Minotaurs – LaDainian Tomlisnon, RB, SD

1.2. Kill Barney Campaign – Steven Jackson, RB, StL

Comments: Not too much to think about here. Even if Larry Johnson had re-upped by the time this pick was made, I would still go with Jackson.

1.3. Who Wants It! – Joseph Addai, RB, Ind

Comments: This pick was the only made by the original owner. The original owner didn’t like the e-mail draft pace and bailed out. We adopted a new owner following this pick, who made all ensuing picks.

1.4. RFD Illini 2 – Frank Gore, RB, SF

1.5. Steel Crazies – Peyton Manning, QB, Ind

1.6. fastgator – Larry Johnson, RB, KC

Comments: Don’t expect L.J. to slip this far any more. This was rare even during the holdout. Certainly won’t happen now that he’s in camp.

1.7. Missouri Sho MEs – Willis McGahee, RB, Buf

1.8. Meatballs – Rudi Johnson, RB, Cin

1.9. RedNeck Yankees – Shaun Alexander, RB, Sea

Comments: This is a steal at No. 9.

1.10. Team Wiggum – Willie Parker, RB, Pit

ROUND 2

2.1. Team Wiggum – Marvin Harrison, WR, Ind

2.2. RedNeck Yankees – Travis Henry, RB, Den

2.3. Meatballs – Laurence Maroney, RB, NE

2.4. Missouri Sho MEs – Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jac

2.5. fastgator – Marc Bulger, QB, StL

Comments: The first major reach of the draft.

2.6. Steel Crazies – Chad Johnson, WR, Cin

2.7. RFD Illini 2 – Reggie Bush, RB, NOr

2.8. Who Wants It! – Brian Westbrook, RB, Phi

9. Kill Barney Campaign – Steve Smith, WR, Car

Comments: Shocking that Westbrook fell so far, and we tried to trade up to snag either him or Bush, to no avail. Not ready to settle for a third-tier RB, we went with who we thought was the best WR in the draft.

2.10. Minotaurs – Carson Palmer, QB, Cin

ROUND 3

3.1. Minotaurs – Terrell Owens, WR, Dal

3.2. Kill Barney Campaign – Torry Holt, WR, StL

Comments: We strayed way off the normal course. Never would we recommend taking two WRs before you have two RBs, but the draft just fell to us this way, much to our dismay. So we took who we have as our No. 3 WR, behind Smith and Chad Johnson. Since we know we are only required to start one RB, it gives us the courage to take the gamble that one of the remaining 6-8 somewhat dependable RBs will be available at the end of the next round.

3.3. Who Wants It! – Lee Evans, WR, Buf

3.4. RFD Illini 2 – Antonio Gates, TE, SD

3.5. Steel Crazies – Reggie Wayne, WR, Ind

3.6. fastgator – Ronnie Brown, RB, Mia

Comments: This is where the second-round Bulger pick cost him. Bulger would still be there here, or even the next round. So he ends up with Brown instead of Bush or Westbrook.

3.7. Missouri Sho MEs – Deuce McAllister

Comments: Certainly there are bigger mistakes to be made, but why take RBs with your first three picks in a league in which you’re only required to start one RB? At this point, Mizzou has one bench spot filled already.

3.8. Meatballs – Drew Brees, QB, NOr

3.9. RedNeck Yankees – Roy Williams, WR, Det

3.10. Team Wiggum – Thomas Jones, RB, NYJ

ROUND 4

4.1. Team Wiggum – Donald Driver, WR, GB

4.2. RedNeck Yankees – Javon Walker, WR, Den

4.3. Meatballs – Marques Colston, WR, NOr

4.4. Missouri Sho MEs – Cedric Benson, RB, Chi

Comments: Four picks. Two starting RBs. Two bench RBs. And it’s not because we don’t like Benson this year, we do. But you can’t squeeze four players into two starting spots. I expect we’ll be hearing some trade banter from this team pretty soon after the draft.

4.5. fastgator – Larry Fitzgrald, WR, Ari

4.6. Steel Crazies – Edgerrin James, RB, Ari

4.7. RFD Illini 2 – T.J. Houshmandzadeh, WR, Cin

4.8. Who Wants It! – Tom Brady, QB, NE

4.9. Kill Barney Campaign – Clinton Portis, RB, Was

Comments: We thought about Brandon Jacobs here, but thought Portis was a better value. He’s gone as high in the second round in some earlier drafts, but has slipped due to inactivity as a result of a knee problem. Reports also allude to his distaste for the preseason. So we tend to think it is disinterest, with a dash of precaution, keeping him out of the action. We needed a RB, and he looked like the best value here.

4.10. Team Wiggum – Ahman Green, RB, Hou

ROUND 5

5.1. Team Wiggum – Andre Johnson, WR, Hou

Comments: We like Johson this season and think his value is on par with a fifth-round pick. But coupled with the Green pick, back to back Texans is a risky proposition.

5.2. Kill Barney Campaign – Brandon Jacobs, RB, NYG

Comments: Now we feel vindicated. If Portis loses carries to Ladell Betts, Jacobs is a guy we feel confident starting every week as well. Thought about Adrian Peterson here, but went with the RB who plays on a team that can at least fake a competent passing game – something Minnesota will be unable to do. We had three players targeted with this pick – two RBs, one QB.

5.3. Kill Barney Campaign (via Who Wants It!) – Donovan McNabb, QB, Phi

Comments: We shipped our 6.9 and 7.2 for the 5.3 and 10.8. We figured Jon Kitna was not going to make it until our next pick (6.9). After Kitna, we could wait until rounds 8-10 for a QB. And none of the immediately available WRs were incredibly wooing (we would be choosing from the likes of Darrell Jackson, Lavernues Coles, Randy Moss, Hines Ward). Certainly, we wouldn’t mind having those guys on our roster. But we thought the disparity at QB was enough to justify the leap.

5.4. RFD Ilini 2 – Anquan Boldin, WR, Ari

5.5. Steel Crazies – Jamal Lewis, RB, Cle

5.6. fastgator – Reggie Brown, WR, Phi

5.7. Missouri Sho MEs – Philip Rivers, QB, SD

5.8. Meatballs – Plaxico Burress, WR, NYG

5.9. RedNeck Yankees – Jon Kitna, QB, Det

Comments: Told you Kitna wasn’t going to make it. After sweating our decision, we feel better about it after this pick.

5.10. Team Wiggum – Marshawn Lynch, RB, Buf

ROUND 6

6.1. Team Wiggum – Lavernues Coles, WR, NYJ

6.2. RedNeck Yankees – Joey Galloway, WR, TB

6.3 Meatballs – Tony Gonzalez, TE, KC

6.4. Missouri Sho MEs – Hines Ward, WR, Pit

6.5. fastgator – Randy Moss, WR, NE

6.6. Steel Crazies – Alge Crumpler, TE, Atl

6.7. RFD Ilini 2 – DeAngelo Williams, RB, Car

6.8. Who Wants It! – Darrell Jackson, WR, SF

6.9. Who Wants It! (via Kill Barney Campaign) – Chris Cooley, TE, Was

Comments: At least he made a good pick with what would have been our pick.

6.10. Minotaurs – Bears, DEF, Chi

Comments: It doesn’t matter when the first defense is chosen, it always seems too early. End of the sixth isn’t that bad I guess.

ROUND 7

7.1. Minotaurs – Carnell Williams, RB, TB

Comments: This could be the best pick of the draft so far. Love Cadillac’s bounceback potential. To grab a feature back of his caliber in the seventh round is amazing.

7.2. Who Wants It! (via Kill Barney Campaign) – Vince Young, QB, Ten

Comments: We’re not in love with Young, but we certainly respect his fantasy potential. Another solid pick in our sted. We think to ourselves, we would trade Young and Cooley for McNabb? That’s tough. We’re not sure we would, because we really like Cooley. We’re not feeling as good about our trade at this point.

7.3. Who Wants It! – Jerious Norwood, RB, Atl

7.4. RFD Illini 2 – Braylon Edwards, WR, Cle

7.5. Steel Crazies – Adam Vinatieri, PK, Ind

Comments: We don’t know wy people think kickers make a difference.

7.6. fastgator – Jeremy Shockey, TE, NYG

7.7. Missouri Sho MEs – Donte Stallworth, WR, NE

7.8. Meatballs – Ravens, DEF, Bal

7.9. RedNeck Yankees – Adrian Peterson, RB, Min

Comments: We know his role is undefined, and Chester Taylor is still in the mix. But at the end of the seventh round, this is a fantastic pickup.

7.10. Team Wiggum – Matt Leinart, QB, Ari

Comments: Had we not made the earlier trade to pick McNabb, we would have been looking for Leinart with our next pick. This would have been a crushing blow. Feeling better about the trade again.

Finally, after what seems like an endless wait, we can see my next pick on the horizon. Who will we pick? Will we be able to get a player good enough in Round 10 to justify the deal? Did we get robbed by Who Wants It!? When will Mizzou start shopping his RBs? How much longer does Lindsay have in rehab? What’s the fastest animal?

Answers to these question and more in the next few days in our not-so-mock draft, version 2.
