The opening day of the thoroughbred meet at Monmouth Park has attracted 89 horses for the 11-race program.

The featured $75,000 Decathlon Stakes for 3-year olds and up drew a field of seven, including Ben Perkins Sr.’s Wildcat Brief, a stakes winner at the New Jersey shore track last summer.

The six furlong Decathlon is the first of this year’s stakes events, which includes 15 graded races.

The highlight of the summer will be the $1 million Haskell Invitational on July 31. Monmouth’s Grade 1 turf race, the $750,000 United Nations Stakes, will highlight the Fourth of July weekend.
