Monti battles strangles
An outbreak of strangles, a highly contagious equine upper respiratory tract infection, at Saratoga Raceway has affected racing at Monticello Raceway.
“As you know we’re on lock down. No horses can leave and return and no trailers with horses can enter,” said Alan Schwartz, president of the Monticello Harness Horsemen’s Assn.
“Monticello is taking every precaution. They sanitized the entire paddock over the weekend,” he added.
Monticello, which stables approximately 500 horses, two-thirds of which are currently racing, plans to cancel several races already carded for today and tomorrow.
