MOURNING’S JUST ‘ZO EAGER
Alonzo Mourning did not attempt a comeback from a kidney transplant to sit out. So Mourning yesterday stressed that he “wouldn’t be happy at all” opening the regular season on the injury list and indicated he might even play tomorrow in the Nets’ final preseason game.
With Mourning giving his optimistic and determined forecast, team president Rod Thorn admitted it was “certainly a possibility” Mourning would be activated for the season opener Wednesday against Miami.
“I’m not injured. I’m not working my butt off in here for nothing. So, no, it would not be OK,” Mourning said about starting the season on the IL. “I think I’ll be close to being ready come Nov. 3 if I can continue to make progress like I have been. Even if [coach Lawrence Frank] has to play me in spurts, that’s fine. I know I’ll be ready to contribute. And the only way for me to continue to get ready is not just playing in practices but playing in games.
“So with that said, I wouldn’t be happy starting on the injured list at all.”
With his cousin serving as the organ donor, Mourning underwent a life-saving kidney transplant last Dec. 19 after playing in 12 Nets games. Following training camp work on conditioning in the past month, he has endured three full-contact practices while wearing a specially-designed protective device on his kidney. Now, he seeks to take the next step in a remarkable comeback.
“I’ve been able to do more than what my doctors and the people around here have thought. Nothing surprises me because I know my will and determination. I know exactly what I’m capable of doing because I played this game for 13 years on this level,” said Mourning, who said he has discussed with the coaching staff the possibility of playing tomorrow against the Sixers in the Meadowlands. “We talked about that. But we’ve got to see how things go on Wednesday and make an assessment.”
Thorn said much will depend on how Mourning fares over the next week.
“We’ll just have to see. He’s had two practices, he’s just starting to play so we’ll determine what kind of shape he’s in. We’ll consult with the training and conditioning coach and see from there,” said Thorn. “Depending on where he is, it certainly is a possibility he could be activated.”
General manager Ed Stefanski also said the upcoming week will be telling. Mourning’s status will be discussed, but the roster call likely belongs to Frank.
“Alonzo has been active in two practices, so we’re optimistic. But the roster, ultimately that’s a coach’s decision,” Stefanski said.
Frank said Mourning’s situation comes down to a “daily evaluation” by player and staff.
“Alonzo and I speak every day. We’ll just see where he’s at. I don’t want to say he is or he isn’t [going to be activated],” offered Frank. “We’ll just wait and see. This is a unique situation. He was in a lot of the practice and now he’s able to do all contact, so come Wednesday, we’ll have a better feel and then maybe I’ll be better equipped to say one way or the other.”
