Spent the day at Yankee Stadium where itâs always fun to see Reggie Jackson. Jackson was wearing a light blue Yankee windbreaker, and had to go in to change and wear the Yankee blue windbreaker before practice started.
Even Hall of Famers have to abide by the rules.
As for abiding by Yankee Rules, that will be the case with Carl Pavano tomorrow at Yankee Stadium. This is a new Pavano, he says, and so does Andy Pettitte, who is the new next door locker mate of Pavano.
More on Pavano tomorrow when Iâm at the opener. Spring training has been all about predictions. Since the Mets are playing right now, letâs talk about whatâs happening instead of what might happen.
Tom Glavine is in the middle of his first jam of the night, with the Mets leading 5-1. From what Iâve seen of Glavine tonight, heâs good for two more years.
The biggest news of the night, though, is that the Mets are so confident that Pedro Martinez will return this year that they are even talking now that they are hopeful he will be back around the All-Star break.
That goes with everything that Iâve been hearing. Guy Conti, the coach who keeps a close eye on Pedro, told me that Pedro is not only coming back for this season, he thinks Pedro is shooting for a return over the next five seasons.
Five more years of Pedro. That is a best case scenario, but that is how good Pedro is feeling right now in his comeback.
As for the game, this is why spring training means nothing. Carlos Delgado spent much of the end of spring training at home in Puerto Rico, joyfully going home for the birth of his child, and he comes out tonight and gets a monster two-run double.
The Mets are capable of this kind of offensive explosion on any night and that is why I think they will be in the World Series this October.
Glavine worked out of it and now it’s in the bullpen’s hands. The Mets bullpen is their strength — even with Duaner Sanchez out of action.
But this is only the first game. Letâs not get ahead of ourselves. Much more tomorrow when I’m at Yankee Stadium for the opener.
