A little more than a week from now, retired Hall of Fame Metcaster Bob Murphy will have a special procedure to attempt to eradicate recently discovered lung cancer.

Murphy’s wife, Joy, said yesterday both she and Bob were optimistic. She emphasized that Bob, 79, is doing well. She also wanted to make sure that friends and fans were not alarmed by the news.

“He’s really doing fine,” Joy said from their Florida home. “He’s up and around every day, doing what he normally is doing.”

Instead of having surgery, Murphy will undergo a procedure known as RF ablation. It is designed to destroy tumors. After last season, Murphy retired from the Mets’ booth as one the most beloved figures in the team’s history. Murphy had broadcast Met games since the team’s inception in 1962.
