Ivan Drago gave us, “I must break you.” Now, Naomi Osaka has given us, “I love you.”

Yes, it is not exactly the strongest smack talk ahead of the US Open women’s final, even if Osaka is considered as much an underdog as Rocky. The Japanese native will take on Serena Williams on Saturday seeking her first grand slam title with her idol in the way.

When asked by ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi if she had a message for Williams after upsetting Madison Keys on Thursday night, Osaka sheepishly said: “I love you.” Osaka has sounded innocent in her on-court interviews but has been ruthless in her matches.

The 20-year-old has lost one set in her six matches thus far in Flushing Meadows, capped by her impressive 6-2, 6-4 win over Keys.

“This is gonna sound really bad, but I was just thinking I really want to play Serena,” Osaka said when asked how she saved all 13 break points against the American.

Despite the reverence being shown Williams, who has 23 career grand slam titles, Osaka has won the only matchup between the two women. In March, Osaka beat Williams 6-3, 6-2 at the Miami Open. That was Williams’ fourth match since the birth of her daughter. She has since advanced to the finals of Wimbledon, where she lost to Angelique Kerber, and now the US Open.

Like Osaka, Williams has lost only one set in the tournament.
