Diane Nelson suffered a broken left ankle and Javier Castellano sustained back and hip injuries yesterday when the two jockeys were involved in a scary, two-horse spill in the first race at Belmont Park.

Nelson’s mount, Sonn D’Oro, broke down in the mile-and-a-sixteenth race on the turf and sent the rider flying. Castellano, aboard Pokerfaced, was right behind and had no chance to avoid the fallen horse. Pokerfaced got up and kept running, stepping on Nelson’s ankle.

Nelson is scheduled to have surgery on her ankle today in Manhattan. X-rays on Castellano were negative, but he was scheduled to have an MRI last night. Sonn D’Oro was put down on the racetrack.
