The NY State Racing and Wagering Board yesterday suspended 16 harness trainers for periods ranging from 60 days to two years, fining them from $750 to $5,000, for using the nasal decongestant Afrin on 28 of their horses. The active ingredient in Afrin, Oxymetazoline, is a prohibited bronchial dilator that enables horses to breath easier.

Of the 28 horses that tested positive, 21 won their respective races, which all occurred in a 12-day span from March 21 to April 1 at Yonkers, Monticello and Saratoga Raceway.
