Jet Report Card

QUARTERBACKS: B

Chad Pennington (27-45, 281 yards, 4 TDs, 2 INTs, 89.2 rating) wasn’t perfect, throwing two INTs and fumbling the ball away on a sack. But he showed why he’s going to be a star when he brought the Jets back and forced OT.

RUNNING BACKS: B

Curtis Martin (28-for-108) continues to run with authority and confidence. LaMont Jordan chipped in with some hard short-yardage running.

WIDE RECEIVERS: B

Santana Moss (10-121, 3 TDs) has been one of the league’s hottest WRs. Wayne Chrebet (4-34) made some key catches during one stretch. Curtis Conway (3-27) dropped a long bomb.

TIGHT ENDS: A-

Anthony Becht (4-44, 1 TD) had a terrific day, making a remarkable catch of Pennington’s game-tying pass. Chris Baker (1-24) was clutch on his one catch, a fourth down late in regulation.

OFFENSIVE LINE: C

Pennington was sacked three times, so the pass-blocking wasn’t as good as it’s been. Run-blocking, however, continues to be a bright spot.

DEFENSIVE LINE: D+

DE Shaun Ellis (half-sack and two tackles) continued his sack streak but wasn’t in Kerry Collins’ face nearly enough. Dewayne Robertson (half-sack and six tackles) rebounded well from last week.

LINEBACKERS: C

Making his first NFL start, Victor Hobson made 11 tackles and was active. Sam Cowart also had 11 tackles, but they seemed quiet.

SECONDARY: D

CB Ray Mickens had a strong game covering. Aaron Beasley, however, was torched by Amani Toomer and Ike Hilliard at different times.

SPECIAL TEAMS: C

Santana Moss (3.5-yard average on four returns) was held in check. Michael Bates and Jonathan Carter were solid on KO returns. Coverage was solid on KOs and punts.

KICKING GAME: F

Doug Brien messed up by not being aware of the clock before having his 51-yard FG blocked in OT. P Dan Stryzinski didn’t have a great day with a 33-yard average.

COACHING: D

Herman Edwards should have gone for the fourth-and-3 in OT rather than try the long FG. Offensive coordinator Paul Hackett should have gone for the jugular instead of running the ball on the Jets’ first series in OT.
