Fifth-seeded David Ferrer needed less than two hours to beat Florian Mayer in the third round of the U.S. Open.

The Spaniard defeated the 26th-seeded Mayer 6-1, 6-2, 7-6 (2) in an hour, 47 minutes Sunday.

Ferrer next faces 21st-seeded Andy Roddick. He was broken only once in the match.

Mayer was in the third round at the Open for the first time. The German had 31 unforced errors.
